This short drama was produced by Ishka Films and shot on location in Galway and Amsterdam. It is something of a family production - written by Eddie, directed by his sister Mia, and music composed by their sister Anna (the Mullarkey clan) - all from Galway, Ireland. It's our first short fiction film.
Oh Brother is inspired by my relationship with my brother. Having Asperger’s Syndrome, he sees the world from a unique point of view and is presented with different challenges; intimate relations haven’t come easily to him. We all have human desires to be with someone and if someone has no outlet to express those desires what can they do? At first I just wrote a scene in a café, a conversation about women between the two brothers. The characters were alive and my sister Mia, the director, told me to explore the idea and the story began writing itself.
When Eddie showed me an early draft of the dialogue I knew the writing was full of character and was excited about developing the scenes with actors. Because the text is full of subtle shifts I wanted to use long takes to let the actors play out their lines without moving the camera too much. Due to it's humorous and naturalistic dialogue, I took inspiration from the styles of Jim Jarmusch and Lenny Abrahamson. Music inspired by King Crimson and Herbie Hancock creates a soundscape for the characters’ inner conflicts and a feeling of mischievous adventure.
